Some of you may not know this but I actually have a degree in Interior Design. I graduated in 2019 but I never actually did anything specific with my degree. I went straight into sharing content on instagram, alongside my twin sister. However, I always say interiors are my first love. I can remember from a very young age being very tuned in to the space around me and how it felt.
My surroundings have always had a huge impact on my emotions. I think this is the reason why it makes so much sense that I landed in the world of “content creating.” I have always been creating spaces and moments that feel and look carefully considered.
I have vivid memories of playing games with my friends and sisters, where I would basically redo my parents living room, to get into character for our game of choice. Which was typically playing “house” and pretending we were adults.
Growing up, my parents living room had bright, lime green walls, a roll arm sofa that was upholstered in a dark blue and green herringbone weave-style fabric and in front of that was a 3’ by 3’ Ethan Allen blonde wood, arts and crafts style coffee table. With that, was a matching tv console that closed to conceal the large boxy tv and matching bookshelves on either side.
So, like any normal child…I had to cover the couch in a vintage white cotton quilt my mom had, clean the coffee table off (it was usually covered in a mess), put out lots of candles and really set the mood for what my “house” would look like, to even consider moving forward playing this “game.”
When I walk into any space now, I have a hard time not redoing it in my head or swapping things out to make them feel more cohesive. I also usually always fall asleep by redesigning rooms in my head…much more fun than counting sheeps.
For me fashion feels like a way of exhibiting this design impulse while I move throughout the world, no matter what room or space I walk into. It allows me to express myself and my joy of design regardless of the space around me and that feels very important to me.
I also think dressing oneself is a much more attainable way to express a sense of style than a full room or home. So, for me this felt like a natural progression into my design mind.
I’ve been incredibly lucky to attend fashion shows & events over the years that have really highlighted the importance of interior design and fashion and how the two really speak to each other. How the two really enhance each other.
I feel like what is trending in the interior design world, almost always has a strong connection to what is trending in the fashion world. They aren’t the same but they are usually speaking a very similar language. The colors, patterns, structures, motifs, hardware, textures, etc.
I’ve also learned this when taking outfit photos, the background is crucial in how the outfit is perceived. The interior space or even exterior space can really enhance the outfit and vice versa. This is really prominent in set design, in film & tv.
The relationship between interior design and fashion really is such a beautiful one. So, I thought it would be a fun challenge to create outfits inspired by some beautiful interiors that I have been loving lately.
